Description
In Karin Weber Gallery’s newest exhibition All-Sea: Eight Oceanic Artistic Practices from Southeast Asia and Hong Kong, curator Caroline Ha Thuc brings together eight artists working on the sea, putting their oceanic art in conversation. The works exhibited each engage with different facets of the living sea, connecting with this often-overlooked part and aspect of our lives.
Two artists from Hong Kong participating in this group exhibition are painter Tsang Chui-mei and multi-media artist Louis To Wun. Tsang paints the rhythmic ebb and flow of the ocean in her signature surreal style, while To brings his latest creation titled “Seafood,” takes the form of a shrimp with a dragon’s head, a visual elaboration of the Chinese character for lobster (龍蝦 lung4 haa1), which literally means “dragon-shrimp.”
The exhibition also features photographs by Cambodian artist Lim Sokchanlina, works from Singaporean artist Charles Lim Yi Yong’s long-term SEA STATE project, paintings by Filipino artist Joar Songcuya, art installations by Indonesian artist Ari Bayuaji from his ongoing community-based project, explorations of the batik tradition by Malaysian painter Faris Ridzwan and a video installation by Moroccan-Thai artist Juria Toramae featuring AI-generated fantastical marine life.
The opening reception will be held on 8 November at the gallery, from 16:00 to 20:00.
