Karin Weber Gallery’s Unique Perspective on Filmmaking

Why We Recommend it
A collaboration between three local artists on filmmaking and the history of cinema, Cinema Reimagined incorporates vintage cinema equipment in their innovative artworks.
Description
Cinema and filmmaking has long been an integral part of Hong Kong’s visual culture. Karin Weber Gallery‘s new exhibition on filmmaking and the history of cinema: Cinema Reimagined: A Journey Through Celluloid Dreams thus makes use of the three artists’ access to a rare collection of vintage cinema equipment in Hong Kong in their works. Works feature inspiration across decades and mediums, including archival theatre catalogues and TV radios, transformed into works of arts looking into nostalgia, solitude and memory.
These three Hong Kong artists include photographer Wong Wo-bik, artist Jay Lau Ka-chun and contemporary composer Kenrick Ho. Wong draws on her experience as a movie projectionist and film editor to blend traditional artistic sensibilities and cutting-edge technology in her works – inviting viewers to explore the area where memory, identity and storytelling intersect in the digital age. Lau expresses his own attraction to archives and records in his research-driven artworks, tapping into the sense of nostalgia for the past despite such items only existing in memory. Ho’s work highlights the contradictory experience of the cinema being both communal and personal as well as immersive, creating interactive pieces for viewers.
