Piano Maestro Kirill Gerstein Plays Liszt for PPHK’s 20th Season

Why We Recommend it

To mark PPHK’s 20th anniversary, piano virtuoso Kirill Gerstein returns with an all-Liszt recital, from the Three Petrarch Sonnets to the monumental Sonata in B minor.

Description

To mark Premiere Performances of Hong Kong (PPHK)’s 20th anniversary season, piano maestro Kirill Gerstein returns to the stage where he first inspired the organisation’s founders with an all-Liszt evening. The programme straddles the legendary composer-virtuoso’s poetic and monumental sides: from the introspective Three Petrarch Sonnets and the Dante-inspired Fantasia quasi Sonata to the showy Polonaise No. 2 and the towering Sonata in B minor — the same work that anchored Gerstein’s 2009 PPHK debut.

A Russian-American artist celebrated for breadth and curiosity, Gerstein continues to commission new works and appear with leading orchestras and festivals worldwide, from the Berlin Philharmonic to the Festival d’Aix-en-Provence. As well as being the 2001 Arthur Rubinstein Gold Medallist, he is the only pianist to win both the Gilmore Young Artist Award and the prestigious Gilmore Artist Award. Gerstein’s recordings have earned a Gramophone Award, three Grammy nominations and a 2025 Opus Klassik for curatorial excellence.

On 28 September, the performance will commence at 19:30. It will last approximately 80 minutes without interval.
