Koji Onaka: Fleeting Observations

Why We Recommend it
Blue Lotus Gallery’s Distance reveals Koji Onaka’s lyrical visions of ordinary life in his first Hong Kong exhibition.
Description
Blue Lotus Gallery’s Distance is the first solo exhibition in Hong Kong by Koji Onaka, one of Japan’s most influential photographers. It gathers works from key series including Distance, Tin Roof & Chimney and Memories of Younger Days in Shinjuku, showcasing Onaka’s sensitivity to the poetry of everyday life. Through understated compositions and fleeting encounters, he turns familiar streets and interiors into tender reflections on memory, time and human connection.
Born in Fukuoka in 1960, Koji Onaka studied photography in Tokyo before joining Image Shop CAMP, the influential collective led by the legendary Daido Moriyama. Since the 1980s, Onaka has developed a warm and spontaneous visual language that blends documentary immediacy with personal reflection. Beyond his own practice, he has played a vital role in Japan’s independent photobook culture through publishing and mentorship.
