Kongkee Explores AI and Spirituality in Future Jataka

Why We Recommend it

The new Kongkee exhibition at gdm Hong Kong explores the intersection of artificial intelligence, spirituality and humanity in a speculative digital future.

Description

The Kongkee exhibition Future Jataka is the Malaysian artist’s debut at gdm Hong Kong. It features LED animations, lenticular lightboxes, neon installations, mixed-media paintings, and a collaborative fiction project with Law Man Lok, creating an imagined future where technology and spirituality merge.

Inspired by the Jataka Tales of the Buddha’s past lives, the exhibition envisions spiritual figures reincarnated in a technologically advanced world filled with flickering screens and cables. A buddha watches through a video recorder lens, a binge-watching buddha consumes digital content and a mechanised Virgin Mary carries a robotic child.

The works encourage reflection on how enlightenment and humanity might manifest in a future shaped by artificial intelligence and digital culture. They raise questions about evolving spiritual guidance and the meaning of humanity in this transformed landscape.

Kongkee, who previously held exhibitions themed around reimagining historical and cultural narratives such as an ancient poet in cyberpunk Hong Kong and the animation project Dragon’s Delusion, continues to explore the boundaries between tradition and technology.

Running at gdm Hong Kong, the exhibition offers a multi-sensory experience that challenges traditional views of spirituality through contemporary technology and art.
