Koon Man Space: Three Artists Animate Rural History

Why We Recommend it

Building on the Chuen Lung Visual Research Archive initiated in 2024, Koon Man Space’s Open Studio II: Temporal Spaces – Chuen Lung Village features three local artists’ immersive explorations of Hong Kong’s rural past and evolving identity.

Description

Building directly on the Chuen Lung Visual Research Archive initiated in 2024, Koon Man Space’s Open Studio II: Temporal Spaces – Chuen Lung Village brings together artists Benjamin Hao, Mono Tung and Tse Pak-chai to creatively reimagine the village’s rich history. Spanning themes of reimagining land, documenting the daily lives of villagers in the 1960s, and tracing their spatial mobility between work and leisure through and across the village, these immersive works explore daily life from the 1960s and the evolving relationships between work, leisure and place. The exhibition invites reflection on how temporal and spatial shifts shape community identity in the face of urbanisation and modernisation.

Hao blends urban and rural perspectives through diverse media to explore human connections with nature and society – inspiring fresh reflection and reimagination. Meanwhile, Tung merges architecture, art and technology like computational design to create spatial narratives that evoke memory, emotion and collective imagination. Tse combines contemporary art and applied social sciences, capturing Chuen Lung’s cultural heritage through portrait photography and oral histories that reveal the village’s deep social and historical fabric.
