Timeless themes of harmony, craftsmanship and nature are showcased in this group exhibit of Korean art, including Choi Young-Wook’s 2024 work “Karma.”
Description
The Korean Narrative: Layers of Korean Aesthetics introduces six prominent contemporary artists who express timeless themes of harmony, craftsmanship and nature. Curated by Ahn Hyun-Jung, this exhibition explores the depth of Korean art and its rich cultural tapestry. Featured artists include Choi Young-Wook, Ha Tae-Im, Kim Duck-Yong, Kim Hyun-Sik, Kim Keun-Tai and Woo Jong-Taek.
Choi Young-Wook’s “Karma” (2024), a rendition of a Korean moon jar, emphasises the bing-ryeol patterns that symbolise life’s karmic relationships. Ha Tae-Im’s curved strokes of acrylic in her Un Passage series interact to forge harmonious relationships and evoke emotional resonance.
Kim Duck-Yong employs Goryeo period mother-of-pearl Najeon inlay techniques to blend oceanic scenery with architecture. Kim Hyun-Sik challenges conventional definitions of art through tactile resin sculptures. Kim Keun-Tai kneads and pours stone powder onto canvas, allowing it to flow autonomously, expressing the harmony of nature and humanity. Woo Jong-Taek captures nature’s essence with his ink paintings, merging traditional media with contemporary, dynamic compositions.
