Discover Beauty and a Secret Garden on Lantau Island

Why We Recommend it

A Royal Geographic Society field trip to Lantau Island’s Southwest Peninsula offers stunning views and cultural history, including the garden of Lung Tsai Ng Yuen, the trip’s highlight.

Description

Organised by the Royal Geographical Society of Hong Kong, this guided hike on Lantau Island features a visit to the Chinese landscaped garden called Lung Tsai Ng Yuen. Developed during the mid-1960s by the late Shanghainese textiles industrialist Wu Kunsheng, the garden has a classical Chinese design with features like a viewing pavilion, zigzag bridge and koi and lily pond.

Participants can choose from two routes of difficulty. The first follows Stage 5 of the Lantau Trail, leading from Keng Shan Road towards Man Cheung Po and continuing to the fishing village of Tai O. This moderately challenging route offers spectacular views and interesting scenery. Meanwhile, the second route follows the Catchwater, which is slightly shorter and less demanding. Both teams will visit Lung Tsai Ng Yuen Garden before continuing towards Tai O. Hiking leader Marco Foehn and the garden’s owner David Wu will share insights into the garden’s history, biodiversity and design.
