Lee Bul’s Art: From 1998 to Now

Why We Recommend it

Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now at M+ offers a comprehensive look at the South Korean contemporary artist’s work from the late 1990s to today.

Description

First shown at the Leeum Museum of Art in Seoul, Lee Bul: From 1998 to Now brings the renowned South Korean contemporary artist’s key works to Hong Kong’s M+. The exhibition is presented into three sections, tracing the artist’s career to date and featuring important works from her studio and collections across Asia and beyond.

It starts with an immersive open landscape, showcasing iconic architectural installations from Lee’s Mon grand récit series (2005–ongoing), alongside a selection of two-dimensional works from the Untitled (Willing To Be Vulnerable — Velvet) and Perdu series (2016–ongoing). The second section presents examples of Lee’s groundbreaking Cyborg and Anagram series from the late 1990s and early 2000s, the works that first brought her international acclaim. The final section, designed to evoke an artist’s studio, features a constellation of drawings, sketches and maquettes, revealing how Lee conceptualises and realises her artworks.

A comprehensive monograph, co-published by M+, Leeum Museum of Art, and Thames & Hudson, accompanies the exhibition and includes new essays by international writers and scholars. Following its presentation at M+, the travelling exhibition will tour to other venues in Europe and North America.
