Macau’s Lion Dance Festival Pays Tribute to Artisans and Performers

Why We Recommend it

This year, Macau’s Lion Dance Festival returns with a highlight exhibition bringing together four lion dance inheritors from different regions and five contemporary cross-media artists.

Description

At the heart of the month-long Macau Lion Dance Festival sits the Lion Dance Culture in Chinese Life exhibition, featuring nine lion heads by master practitioners and contemporary artists from different regions. Four were made by lion dance inheritors including Hui Ka-hung of Hong Kong, Zhao Weibin of Guangzhou, Li Wanzhen of Foshan, and Siow Ho Phiew of Malaysia. Their artwork follows the traditional four-stage process of binding, mounting, painting and decorating. The five contemporary works reinterpret the lion head through different materials, including a neon-tube lion head by Hong Kong cross-media artist Jive Lau of Kowloneon.

Alongside the exhibition, there are free workshops, talks and sharing sessions with the artists; Master Hui will speak on 11 October at 13:00.

During the festival, MGM will also organise the 13th International Lion Dance Championship 2026, taking place on 10 and 11 October in front of A-Ma Temple, a Macau World Heritage landmark. The event will feature more than 270 athletes from 25 teams representing 14 countries and regions, from Hong Kong, Singapore and Italy to first-time contender Canada.
