New Jazz Voice: A Bowen Li Double Bill

Why We Recommend it
Hong Kong-based Brad Mehldau discipline Bowen Li performs two duo sets with two different collaborators, in two venues in two days.
Description
In just the latest sign of Hong Kong’s sudden embrace of all things jazz, a new gig series just launched on the west of Hong Kong island. Drip Music — the forward-driven music organization led by scene stalwart, guitarist Teriver Cheung — has signed a three-year venue partnership which will see it presenting regular shows at Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre. We’re promised the first international guests in September, but the programme is enjoying a soft launch roll out with a string of free afternoon chamber jazz performances in the foyer.
On 31 May, the new Mini Concert Series features pianist Bowen Li – a gifted and harmonically mature player with more than a touch of Brad Mehldau in his melodic make-up – in a duet with his regular bassist, Nelson Fung. In what can’t be a coincidence, the night before, Li also performs with guitarist Cheung in a second duet, at Coda, the jazz kissa the pianist co-founded last year.
Li and Cheung’s ticketed performance at Coda on 30 May begins at 20:00, while the free Sai Wan Ho Civic Centre takes place on 31 May at 14:00.
