Ryuichi Sakamoto: An Ode in Music

Why We Recommend it
Two intimate films, Coda and Opus, trace revered composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s enduring artistry and final moments with moving clarity.
Description
Legendary late composer Ryuichi Sakamoto’s (1952–2023) lifelong pursuit of sound, emotion and form continues to resonate through two deeply personal films that capture his creative essence and final years.
Directed by Stephen Nomura Schible, Coda offers an intimate portrait of Ryuichi Sakamoto’s creative world, following the celebrated composer as he reflects on a lifetime devoted to sound and experimentation. Screening on 27 February and 22 March, the film captures his meticulous process in creating his nineteenth studio album async — blending field recordings, cinematic influences and a deep engagement with the natural world. Interwoven with rare archival footage, it traces the full breadth of his artistic journey — from the pioneering days of Yellow Magic Orchestra to his celebrated film scores like The Last Emperor.
His final performance is captured in Opus, directed by his son Neo Sora. Recorded at NHK’s 509 Studio in Tokyo, the black-and-white concert film distills Sakamoto’s profound connection with the piano into a moving farewell, embracing every breath, pause and imperfection. There will be two screenings on 7 and 20 March. The 7 March screening will be followed by a Cantonese conversation with musician Kung Chi-shing, moderated by M+’s assistant curator of moving image, Francisco Lo.
