Field Trip: Ma Shi Chau Geopark

Why We Recommend it
Explore 280-million-year-old geological formations and scenic trails at Ma Shi Chau with geographer Arthur Yeung.
Description
Ma Shi Chau, part of Hong Kong’s UNESCO Global Geopark, is celebrated for its ancient sedimentary rocks dating back 280 million years and unique geological formations. Once an island in Tolo Harbour, it is now accessible via a sandspit tombolo connecting it to Yim Tin Tsai. The special area designation in 1999 preserves its rich geological heritage, making it a valuable site for geology and scenic enthusiasts.
The tour is led by Arthur Yeung, a geographer and sustainable urban planning expert with a doctorate in geography and resource management from the Chinese University of Hong Kong. He specialises in human-environment relationships, guiding participants to engage deeply with the landscape and its stories.
On 13 December, the field trip departs from Central at 08:30 and returns by 14:00. Lasting around 3.5 hours, it covers Sam Mun Tsai Village, Ma Shi Chau Geopark, Lung Mei Beach and the tombolo.
