Martin Parr: A Raw, Unfiltered Lens on HK’s Changing Realities

Why We Recommend it
A timely online exhibition revisiting late photographer Martin Parr’s commissioned Hong Kong series, alongside his colour-saturated portraits of everyday life.
Description
Commissioned by Blindspot Gallery, this online exhibition revisits key works by photographer Martin Parr, spanning three series: The Last Resort (1983–1985), Luxury (1995–2011) and Hong Kong (2013). It reflects on Parr’s (1952–2025) enduring relevance in a world transformed by social and cultural change. His images — at once humourous and unsettling — capture the textures of consumerism, tourism and urban life, revealing moments that feel both specific to their time and uncannily familiar today.
A pioneer of contemporary photographic culture and the president of Magnum Photos (2013-2017), Parr was one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary photography, known for his embrace of colour and his unflinching attention to the absurdities of modern life. Shifting away from black-and-white documentary early in his career, he developed a visual language defined by saturated hues, tight framing and ironic wit. Across decades of work, he chronicled the rituals, excesses and contradictions of everyday experience, offering a lens that was as critical as it was affectionate. An avid collector of photography books, Parr has published over 140 books of his own work and edited another 30.
His solo exhibitions include large-scale retrospectives of his work in Jeu de Paume (Paris, 2026), Foam Museum (Amsterdam, 2026), Fotografiska (Shanghai & Stockholm, 2025-2026), Neues Museum Nürnberg (Nuremberg, 2025), MUDEC Museo delle culture (Milan, 2024) and other prestigious venues.
