Talk: Memoirs of a Modern Slavery Activist by Matt Friedman

Why We Recommend it

Renowned activist Matt Friedman explores modern slavery in Asia through first-hand accounts, alongside his journey as a leading anti-trafficking advocate.

Description

Led by well-known activist Matt Friedman, this talk offers a grounded look at modern slavery across Asia, drawing on firsthand accounts from victims, perpetrators and frontline activists. He connects these narratives to broader systems of exploitation, from supply chains to migration, while unpacking how businesses, governments and individuals are responding. Moving beyond statistics, he interprets these stories to reveal patterns, blind spots and opportunities for action, making a complex issue both immediate and tangible.

An international human trafficking expert educated at New York University, Friedman has worked across more than 30 countries, with the United States Agency for International Development and the United Nations. He is now CEO of The Mekong Club, a Hong Kong-based network mobilising the private sector against modern slavery. He has authored 12 books on the subject and is widely cited in global media, including CNN, BBC, The New York Times and the International Herald Tribune. In 2017, he received Asia’s prestigious “Communicator of the Year” Gold Award and continues to speak at major conferences worldwide.

On 30 July, registration begins at 18:45, followed by the talk at 19:30. Complimentary wine will be served.
