Microwave Festival 2025: A Walk Through Art and Tech

Why We Recommend it

Microwave Festival 2025 explores art and technology’s role in healing social wounds through immersive exhibitions, participatory projects and international works.

Description

The Microwave International New Media Arts Festival 2025 returns to Hong Kong City Hall from 7 to 16 November, presenting cutting-edge media artworks under the theme “Walk Through Walls” (就算天空再深). Curated by acclaimed international media art curator Joel Kwong, the festival transcends diagnosing mental health challenges to explore how art and technology can foster collective healing – with a focus on archives, shared memories and community recovery.

Founded in 1996 by media artist and curator Ellen Pau, Microwave has been a pioneering force in Asia’s media art scene. This year’s edition responds to social isolation and digital transformation, sparking dialogue on immersive technologies and digital culture’s role in healing.

The main exhibition features pioneering international artists with works ranging from emotion AI-driven VR performances by media artist Semi Ryu, interactive journal analysis by Dominique Chen, to immersive installations like Madi Boyd’s “Digital Forest.” The Satellite Project Room expands the narrative through youth-inspired transmedia storytelling, blending film, animation and emotion tracking crafted by local creative talents.

The show’s grand opening is on 6 November, from 18:00 to 21:00. It will be open from 7 to 16 November, from 12:00 to 20:00.
