Angela Yuen Explores How Hong Kong Looks

Why We Recommend it

In Mirage, Angela Yuen presents two new installations crafted with her signature style of light projection and found objects, prompting reflection on urban memories and identities.

Description

What does Hong Kong look like to you? Angela Yuen gives her answer with her artworks in Mirage. The titular installation is full of kids’ meal toys, arcade machine accessories and other knickknacks. With the assistance of light projection techniques, it blasts the viewer with a wave of childhood glee. Whose city do these objects represent, and where these objects belong? The installation invites us to reflect on Hong Kong’s urban memories, its urban imaginaries, and its relationship with consumer culture.

The installation “City Styling Manual” also utilises Yuen’s signature use of light projection and found objects, presenting a miniature world map through souvenirs of landmarks on a conveyor belt. How do we represent and interpret the identities of cities, especially as tourist consumers?
