The Next Wave: Modern Vietnamese Art at Bonhams Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it

The world’s first ever selling exhibition dedicated to the second-generation of Vietnamese artists, “The Next Wave | Modern Vietnamese Art” will be the first of its kind globally to highlight the artists – many of whom trained in Ecole des Beaux Arts, Indochine – working through the post-war years in Vietnam.

Description

Bonhams Hong Kong is presenting the world’s first ever selling exhibition dedicated to the second-generation of Vietnamese artists. Titled “The Next Wave | Modern Vietnamese Art”, it will be the first of its kind globally to highlight the artists – many of whom trained in Ecole des Beaux Arts, Indochine (EBAI) – working through the post-war years in Vietnam.

In Asia, the art market’s current focus is on a couple of first generation artist-graduates such as Le Pho, Mai Thu and Vu Cao Dam. That is why Bonhams has decided to be the first to acknowledge the breadth of Vietnamese modern art produced by later graduates, amongst them Hoang Tich Chu, Nguyen Tien Chung, Bui Xuan Phai, Nguyen Tu Nghiem, Nguyen Trung, Pham Ngoc Sy, Ho Huu Thu and Do Quang Em.

“The Next Wave” will be curated as a pavilion of modern Vietnamese art, featuring a handful of significant and representative works of each artist, accompanied by detailed biographies and an art-historical examination of where they stand, inter-generationally and stylistically, within the pantheon of modern Vietnamese art.
