Making It Matters: Art, Craft and Their Lasting Impact

Why We Recommend it
M+’s Making It Matters explores the creative process, blending art, design and societal reflection through historic and contemporary works.
Description
M+’s Making It Matters is an exploration of the artistic process as a form of creative expression with deep impacts on individuals, communities and ecosystems. Drawn from the M+ Collections, the exhibition features diverse artists, designers and architects such as Anothermountainman (Stanley Wong), Harold Cohen and Võ Trọng Nghĩa Architects. Structured into four thematic sections — Ceramics, Material Potential, The Hand and the Machine, and Actions and Consequences — it traces the journey from concept through research, design and fabrication.
Highlights include a Qing Dynasty (1644–1912) vase with tubular handles and lotus design (Ceramics), a restored Hong Kong neon sign for Very Good Tailor (1963) will be on display in the museum for the first time (Material Potential), “Machine Painting Series TCM#14″ by Harold Cohen, known as the pioneer of early AI computer art (The Hand and the Machine) and Vietnamese design studio Ki Saigon’s “Letters to the Future,” reflecting on the lasting impact of single-use plastic waste (Actions and Consequences), among others. These works invite visitors to reconsider their roles in the creative process and its broader ethical and ecological contexts, underscoring why making continues to matter today.
