Luminous Neon Exhibition Revives Hong Kong’s Icon

Why We Recommend it
Luminous Neon, co-presented by Hong Kong Design Centre and Tetra Neon Exchange, brings together the old and new neon pieces to celebrate the city’s glowing visual heritage.
Description
Once defining Hong Kong’s streetscape and skyline, neon signs have been removed in recent years due to safety concerns. Some of these iconic symbols are being rescued by organisations such as Tetra Neon Exchange (TNX) and are now revitalised at the Hong Kong Design Centre (HKDC) exhibition, Luminous Neon.
Co-presented by HKDC and TNX, the exhibition revives the city’s iconic signs, including the Golden Phoenix Grill Restaurant, salvaged in September, as well as those from Tai Ping Koon in neighbouring Yau Mei Tei, the Nam Cheong Pawn Shop and Da Cheong Computer Optical Centre with their beloved Ray-Ban-inspired neon frames.
Alongside these revived emblems of the past stands a new generation of contemporary neon artisans, transforming traditional signage into bold two- and three-dimensional works that showcase the multifaceted nature of neon art.
Together, these old and new illuminations highlight the diverse applications of neon art. The exhibition seeks to illuminate the historical significance of neon while celebrating its role in contemporary art, design and urban culture.
