Olivier Cong Performs Tropical Church at the Cattle Depot

Why We Recommend it

Hong Kong-based musician and composer Olivier Cong presents his second album, Tropical Church, with a two-night immersive performance at Cattle Depot Artist Village.

Description

Olivier Cong will showcase his ambient and instrumental music in a live performance at Cattle Depot Artist Village at 20:00 on 20 June and 17:00 on 21 June. The show also features moving images by Hong Kong film and art director Man Lim-chung and it highlights music from Cong’s second album, Tropical Church, released by renowned Australian contemporary label Room40.

Blending various instruments such as piano, strings, sheng and shakuhachi, the performance will bring a meditative experience that is often interrupted by screeches, whistles, vocalisations and more. This will be Cong’s final Hong Kong performance before embarking on a six-month arts development fellowship in New York from July to December 2025. There, he will engage with diverse cultural communities through cross-disciplinary collaborations in music, visual art, theatre and dance, with performances planned at venues such as Pioneer Works and Public Records.

Regarded as one of Hong Kong’s most innovative musicians, Cong has composed for top institutions such as the City Contemporary Dance Company, collaborated with the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra and Chung Ying Theatre Company and worked alongside writer Hon Lai-chu on multidisciplinary projects. His latest album was originally planned for release on Ryuichi Sakamoto’s label before the legendary composer’s passing and serves as a heartfelt tribute to both Sakamoto’s legacy and Hong Kong. The album also features cover art by Palme d’Or-winning Thai film director Apichatpong Weerasethakul.
