Only the Lonely: Artists Nadim Abbas and Wang Tuo Explore the Otaku

Why We Recommend it
In this exhibition, Hong Kong artist Nadim Abbas and Beijing-based Wang Tuo join forces to create a site-specific mixed-media and video installation bound together by their shared fascination for urban subcultures.
Description
Though differing in their preferred choice of medium, both artists are keen observers of the culture around manga and anime. In their work, the artists use this phenomenon as a lens through which they explore different concepts of reality.
Inspired by the figure of the otaku – a Japanese term referring to a person with obsessive interests, often used to describe someone fixated on manga. Many otaku prefer the imaginary world to the real one, some to the point of withdrawing completely from society for great stretches of time, and living as hermits in their rooms.
