A Modern Literati’s Lair Reimagined at Ora-Ora exhibition

Why We Recommend it

Ora-Ora’s new multi-disciplinary group exhibition imagines a fictional modern literati’s studio, where historical objects and contemporary creations coexist.

Description

Ora-Ora’s new show is an immersive affair. Conceived as the fictional layout of a scholar’s studio, the exhibition pays tribute to its location on Hollywood Road, where fine rosewood furniture was once traded. It juxtaposes Ming dynasty huanghuali, Qing dynasty zitan and Republican-era rosewood furniture with contemporary art, crafts and wearable art by 13 artists.

Titled Pleasure-Dome of Hills: A Curated Hallucination of a Modern Literati, this intriguing exhibition marks the Ora-Ora gallery’s first collaboration with independent Hong Kong-based curator Zoie Yung.

Highlights includes the bone-like structure of mountains evoked by Vann Kwok’s flowing metal forms and the cosmological contours shaped by astronomy, philosophy and religion in the work of New York-based artist Emily Cheng. The line-up also features Bunchi Chan Cho-kiu, Dave Chow Yui-wang, Huang Dan, Ashlee Ip, Lam Duen Shan-ming, Lau Hiu-tung, Mindy Lui, Gerald Mak, Tse Chun-sing, Wengio Wong and Zhang Zhihui.

The exhibition is part of Ora-Ora’s 20th anniversary celebrations. The opening reception will be held on 27 August at 17:00.
