Organic City: Daphné Mandel Interprets Hong Kong’s Urban Aesthetic

Why We Recommend it

Hong Kong-based French artist Daphné Mandel explores old Hong Kong’s urban and natural landscape in her whimsical and poetic art works.

Description

Pékin Fine Arts presents Organic City, a solo exhibition featuring whimsical and poetic works by Hong Kong-based French artist Daphné Mandel.

Mandel explores old Hong Kong’s urban and natural landscape in her works, while introducing imaginary and whimsical elements as a way to exploit the urban paradoxes of this constantly changing city.

Mandel also introduces a sense of ultra-realism to her works, contrasting with the more artisanal modes of expression such as painting, crayon and collage. Her art is often disconnected from reality, but incorporates poetry and illusion.

A combination of contemporary digital tools and more tactile, artisanal and traditional techniques, Mandel’s mix of tools mirrors Hong Kong’s urban aesthetic– the luxurious and polished juxtaposed with the untidied and derelict.

Organic City is an Associated Project of The French May 2020
