Why We Recommend it

F11 Foto Museum presents the photography exhibition Ilse Bing – Paris and Beyond, featuring over 100 works by the “Queen of the Leica” Ilse Bing.
Born to a wealthy Jewish family in Frankfurt in 1899, the influential photographer helped turn Paris into a centre of modern photography in the 1930s. A majority of the vintage prints at the exhibition were taken at the height of Bing’s career in Paris, while the rest reflects the drastic evolution of her spirit after World War II.
Bing was also a pioneer to venture into solarisation, electronic flash and night photography, and established her own distinctive style of photography embracing romanticism, symbolism and surrealism. Her commissioned works included assignments for fashion magazines Vogue and the American Harper’s Bazaar.
This exhibition, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, is a photographic memoir of Bing’s dramatic journey to self-fulfillment and her search for new artistic ideas and expressions.
Ilse Bing – Paris and Beyond is an associated project of Le French May 2020.
