Why We Recommend it
Dive into Marty Schnapf’s solo exhibition, Vignettes, where dreams, memory and surreal figures blur reality and imagination.
Description
Perrotin’s Vignettes showcases visual artist Marty Schnapf’s ethereal paintings, inviting viewers into a dreamlike space where reality blends with surrealism. The show features a range of works from intimately scaled, roughly window-sized canvases to large-scale immersive paintings – each layered with symbolic figures, cryptic motifs and fluid brushstrokes.
Notable highlights include “Memory Pool,” where a translucent figure stands waist-deep in ocean water amid glowing fish, symbolising the depths of the subconscious. “The Grateful Swimmer” shows a figure floating in the sea, evoking themes of abstraction and reality. Both works immerse viewers in Schnapf’s exploration of fluid boundaries between dreams, memories and desires.
Born in 1977 and based in Los Angeles, Schnapf integrates his expertise in painting, printmaking and sculpture into these works. His practice focuses on psychological and somatic realms, capturing transient moments suspended between the tangible and imagined.
