Persephone: Mary Weatherford’s Debut Solo Exhibition in Asia

Why We Recommend it

Mary Weatherford’s first solo exhibition in Asia Persephone presents luminous vinyl emulsion paintings on linen — some dotted with neon, seashells and coral.

Description

Gagosian Hong Kong presents Persephone, contemporary artist Mary Weatherford’s first solo exhibition in Asia. Renowned for her large abstract works incorporating neon tubes, Persephone unveils new paintings that reflect the changing seasons through a mythological lens, while also paying homage to the history of neon light.

The exhibition unfolds across three spaces designed by the acclaimed architectural firm Johnston Marklee, each offering a glimpse into the next. It showcases Weatherford’s new series of luminous paintings in vinyl emulsion paint on linen, some augmented with coloured neon tubes, seashells or coral. Her use of vintage technology to punctuate the paintings’ fresco-like surfaces mirrors Hong Kong’s nostalgic and ongoing love affair with neon.

Among them are monumental “Landslide,” named after the 1975 Fleetwood Mac hit written by Stevie Nicks, alongside works that build upon Sea and Space, Weatherford’s 2024 exhibition at Gagosian New York.

The opening reception will be held on 24 March, from 18:00 to 20:00.
