Photo Exhibition: When The Shutter Closes

Why We Recommend it

When the Shutter Closes, a solo exhibition by Hong Kong artist Alexis Ho at photography bookstore DEVEDO, reflects on impermanence and transformation of photography.

Description

Hong Kong photography bookstore DEVEDO presents When the Shutter Closes, a solo exhibition by artist Daphne Alexis Ho that reflects on the impermanence and transformative nature of photography through three interconnected series: “Unstill, “Tear,” and “Still.”

Rather than treating the photograph as a fixed record, Ho approaches it as both surface and object, capable of change. Her work is inspired by the Japanese aesthetic concept of ma — the living pause, the space between moments where things breathe and become. This sense of openness echoes throughout Ho’s process of layering, tearing and waiting.

In “Unstill,” granulated natural pigments of white, black gold and black silver scatter across monochromatic landscapes, suggesting that the photographic image is never entirely static. The “Tear” series extends this inquiry through acts of rupture and repair, presenting photographs that have been torn and meticulously rejoined along seams traced with gold pigment. By contrast, the works in the “Still” series remain untouched, suggesting that completion may reside within the photograph itself.

When the Shutter Closes runs from Wednesday to Saturday, 14:00 to 19:00, by appointment only via private message on Instagram. A talk featuring Ho and moderated by DEVEDO founder Lau Tung-pui will be held on 27 June from 17:00 to 19:00.
