Why We Recommend it
See Picasso’s iconic anti-war painting reimagined in sand. Lee Mingwei’s Guernica in Sand at M+ explores impermanence, destruction, and recreation through a unique installation and performance.
Description
M+ features Lee Mingwei’s Guernica in Sand, a large-scale installation and performance. The artist reimagines Pablo Picasso’s powerful 1937 masterpiece “Guernica” using sand, a material that embodies impermanence and instability.
This meticulously crafted work references global traditions of sand painting and mandalas, offering a poignant reflection on the themes of war, destruction, and renewal. Towards the end of the display, a live performance invites visitors to walk on the sand painting, before performers sweep the sand away, destroying and recreating the image. This presentation runs parallel to Picasso for Asia: A Conversation.
