Red A’s Plastic Lampshades Light Up the Blue House

Why We Recommend it

The Blue House is celebrating this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival with lanterns outside the building, as well as a special display of Red A’s iconic red market lampshades along its ground floor corridor.

Description

Lighting up this year’s Mid-Autumn Festival, the Blue House is not only hanging eco-friendly lanterns outside the building but also displaying special Red A’s iconic red market lampshades.

On the ground floor of the preserved and restored 1920s tong lau shophouse are Red A’s iconic red plastic lampshades, commonly seen in Hong Kong’s markets. Lit up from 18:00 to 21:30 every day, the bright red glow refracted through the plastic casts a hazy light, adding a distinctive Hong Kong touch to the festival.

Alongside the displays, The Hong Kong House of Stories at the Blue House is also launching a special exhibition featuring four out-of-print Red A’s plastic crystal chandeliers. All of them were manufactured in Hong Kong between the 1960s and 1980s, offering a glimpse into everyday life in the past and showcasing the city’s industrial aesthetics.

Closed on Wednesdays and public holidays, the exhibition will be on view until 4 October, from 10:00 to 18:00, with free admission.
