Plastic Island: A Fable of Fragile Humanity

Why We Recommend it
Plastic Island transforms the absurdity of error and awkwardness into tender, wordless storytelling through full mask and physical theatre.
Description
In a future world overrun by plastic, Plastic Island follows a family whose every clumsy movement and misstep unveils the fragile beauty of being human. This non-verbal mask theatre performance reimagines awkwardness as authenticity — transforming errors, impulses and hesitation into emotional language through rhythm, movement and humour. The result is a fable of absurdity that allows audiences to rediscover forgotten tenderness and bitterness in everyday life.
As one of Hong Kong’s rare full-mask theatre works, Plastic Island carries Free to Play Theatre’s decade-long exploration of physical storytelling without words — exploring mask and clown-based physical expression.
Created by artistic director Sheena Cheung and director David Bensimhon, the performance merges Cheung’s mastery of mask and physical structure with Bensimhon’s jazz-infused direction and sonic landscape design, forming a cross-cultural energy between Asian sensitivity and European mask traditions.
