Tracing Portuguese Roots in Hong Kong’s Society and Culture

Why We Recommend it
More than 250 exhibits and 30 multimedia programmes at the Museum of History showcase the diverse contributions of the Portuguese and Macanese community to Hong Kong’s governance, business, sports, botany, defence and culture.
Description
As part of the Museum of History’s Multifaceted Hong Kong series of exhibitions, the Estórias Lusas – Stories of the Hong Kong Portuguese exhibition showcases the enduring legacy of one of Hong Kong’s most notable communities. With roots in Macau and other Portuguese outposts across Asia, Hong Kong’s Portuguese played pivotal roles in shaping the city across different fields, including governance, law, business, sports and more.
The exhibition features over 250 exhibits, multimedia programmes and personal stories. In a zone decorated as the sala de encontro (meeting lounge) of a Portuguese home, it also celebrates the distinctive cultural traditions such as Macanese cuisine and the Cantonese, Malay and Sinhala-influenced creole called patuá, offering a vivid insight into the community’s unique identity. From legal pioneers to entrepreneurs and educators, Estórias Lusas reveals often overlooked narratives beneath Hong Kong’s dominant Sino-British history, honouring the Portuguese community’s vital role in shaping the city’s rich social and cultural fabric.
Guided tours are available to the public on a first-come, first-served basis. Each session last about 1 hour and accommodates up to 20 participants.
