Prog-Punk Virtuosos Say Mosquito Rock Underground Legends

Why We Recommend it
Mixing punk-rock energy with proggish virtuosity, Say Mosquito come out of the woods to claim their crown as Underground Legends.
Description
Say Mosquito surely rank among Hong Kong’s best-kept musical secrets — a semi-mythical, erratic, intense, sonic omnivore that is rarely spotted in the wild. New sighting alert: this beastly band has been confirmed to perform at The Underground’s summer Legends show — perhaps because it tickled the freakishly tight power trio to be rightly acknowledged as the legends few know them to be. After all, they’ve been slogging their music around town since 2011, so if you don’t know them yet, it’s time to catch up.
The name is a play on the Chinese character 死 — so, “die mosquito!” Stylistically, expect punkish punch and proggish precision to merge in a thrilling assault of breakneck tempos, surrealist solemnity and deadpan humour. Highlights include (old, silly) songs about killing a hamster and the psychokiller David Berkowitz — light relief from the newer heavier work about the climate crisis and impending global apocalypse, perhaps best epitomised in hard-hitting determinism of “Destiny” and the darkly comic “Never Trust a Scientist.”
Fellow travelling legends on this three-part bill are reliably upbeat rock stalwarts Andy is Typing…, a joke that never gets old even as the band celebrates its 10th anniversary, and the return of a Erik Piece, a singer-songwriter coming out of hibernation more than two decades after making an Underground debut. Legends, unite!
Doors open 20.30, the gig kicks off at 21:00, and drinks are BYOB.
