Field Trip: Lei Yue Mun and Cha Kwo Ling Village

Why We Recommend it
Join geographer Arthur Yeung on a walk tracing Hong Kong’s fishing villages and urban transformation from Lei Yue Mun to Cha Kwo Ling.
Description
Discover Hong Kong’s evolving coastal landscape on a guided walk from Lei Yue Mun — a 200-year-old Hakka mining and fishing hub turned seaside icon — to Cha Kwo Ling, a 400-year-old urban village now facing demolition for public housing. These sites highlight tensions between heritage preservation and urban pressures like housing projects, reclamation and infrastructure. The route blends fishing village life, historical landscapes and urban history, contrasting tradition with modern development across coastal paths and hillsides. The terrain is mostly easy to moderate, but includes some uphill sections and narrow streets.
Yeung is the founder of V’air, a geographer and educator specialising in people-place relationships and sustainable urban planning. Arthur holds a master’s degree in urban planning and is currently a PhD candidate at the Chinese University of Hong Kong.
The half-day route starts at Yau Tong MTR at 10:30, passing through Lei Yue Mun Village, Old Quarry, Yau Tong inner-city area and Cha Kwo Ling Village before ending at 13:30.
