Description

M+ presents Robert Rauschenberg and Asia, the first exhibition in Hong Kong dedicated to art by the American artist created during and in response to his travels across Asia.

Highlighting cross-cultural and cross-temporal artistic exchanges, the exhibition features over 40 works by Rauschenberg alongside select pieces by Asian artists that engage in dialogue with his practice. It explores the conceptual, formal and material influences on Rauschenberg’s work, including his sourcing of textiles and collaborations with paper makers and ceramicists in China, India and Japan.

The exhibition also examines the history and legacy of Rauschenberg’s Overseas Culture Interchange projects, which included exhibitions in Beijing (1985), Lhasa (1985), Tokyo (1986) and Kuala Lumpur (1990), and their lasting impact on local artists. This display not only features works by Rauschenberg but also showcases Asian artists in conversation with his practice, marking the centenary of the artist’s birth.
