Robert Ryman’s Tactile White Paint Works at David Zwirner

Why We Recommend it

Robert Ryman, renowned for his tactile works using white paint in its many permutations, holds his first solo exhibition in Greater China at David Zwirner Hong Kong.

Description

Robert Ryman’s first solo presentation in Greater China will take place at David Zwirner’s Hong Kong location. Renowned for his tactile works using white paint in its many permutations, the exhibition explores how Ryman’s early pieces maintain a compelling dialogue with those from later in his career.

Beginning in the 1960s, Ryman eschewed self-contained representational and abstract imagery, prioritising the physical gesture of applying paint to a support. His experimentation with visible fasteners and unique hardware, employed in his works during the late 1970s and 1980s, is exemplified in pieces such as “Alliance” (1976) and “Part 5” (1993).

Installed non-chronologically across the two floors of the Hong Kong gallery, the exhibition aims to capture the compelling dialogue between his earlier and later works. Formative pieces, such as the “Crazy Series,” will be displayed alongside later works like “The Painting of the Mysterious Shadow” (1966) and “Classico 6” (1968).
