Sam Lui Explores Authority and Storytelling at Para Site

Why We Recommend it
Para Site hosts Hong Kong artist Sam Lui for a two-month residency that transforms the gallery’s 10th floor space into a hub for storytelling and shared inquiry.
Description
Para Site’s on-site residency welcomes Sam Lui, who deepens her ongoing exploration Wendy’s Wok World, a narrative performance project centred on an apprentice’s quest to master the discipline of traditional Cantonese wok cooking. Through the invented figure of Wendy, Lui interrogates ideas of purity, mastery and how authority is internalised and enacted in everyday cultural rituals.
During her residency, Lui focuses on developing a new artist book, turning the archiving and storytelling of Wendy’s Wok World into print. The process unfolds in public through a series of discursive activities: book clubs, group discussions and informal gatherings that invite visitors to collaborate in shaping both narrative and reflection. Lui also holds open studio hours every Thursday from 16:00 to 18:00, providing time for conversation and direct engagement with her practice.
This residency, organised by Yuanyu Li in collaboration with Jessie Kwok, continues Para Site’s commitment to experimentation and community. The space functions as a porous platform where narrative, embodied performance, and research simmer alongside dialogue, inviting the public to witness and participate in new forms of creative exchange.
