Shahana Rajani: In Drawing, In Remembrance

Why We Recommend it

Pakistani artist Shahana Rajani’s first solo exhibition in Hong Kong centres on two video works following coastal communities in Pakistan using drawing to confront displacement and infrastructural violence.

Description

Pakistani artist Shahana Rajani’s first Hong Kong solo exhibition at Para Site, In drawing, in remembrance, explores the communities in coastal Pakistan who use various drawing practices to confront displacement and infrastructural violence.

The exhibition features two video works by the artist: “Four Acts of Recovery,” a meditative documentary about a fisher family uprooted from the Indus River Delta as they try to reconnect with their disappearing homeland; and “Lines That World a River,” a video essay that critiques the political and capitalist forces damaging Karachi’s river ecologies by engaging with activists and elders.

Alongside the two videos, the exhibition includes images, sound, and objects from the region, embodying processes of retracing and recovery to highlight the shared vulnerability and resilience across communities and geographies.

At the opening reception on 11 October 2025, Shahana Rajani will join Han Nefkens, a Dutch writer and collector, for a conversation at Para Site from 15:00 to 16:00.

Update: Throughout January 2026, two free programmes will complement the exhibition. Led by artist and educator Michelle Lee Ho-wing, Drawing as Portal (17 January) invites visitors to reimagine drawing as a mystical and imaginative act. The workshop runs in two parts: 14:00–15:30 (Cantonese) and 16:30–18:00 (English). RSVP here.

On 31 January, Shifting Waters: Hong Kong’s Man-made Hydrogeography will feature a talk and walking tour exploring the city’s engineered waterscapes. Join the talk by urbanist Carine Lai at Para Site from 15:00–16:30, followed by a walking tour from Para Site to the North Point harbourfront between 17:00 and 18:00, led by Lai (in English) and creative professional Phoebe Tsui (in Cantonese).
