Exploring Emotional Themes in the Sigg Collection

Why We Recommend it

A new show drawn from the M+ Sigg Collection traces emotional landscapes in contemporary Chinese art, reflecting how artists navigated rapid transformation between the 1990s and 2010s.

Description

Inner Worlds is the latest exhibition drawn from the Sigg Collection, focusing on how Chinese artists expressed emotion during a period of profound social and cultural change. Spanning the mid-1990s to 2010s, the display reflects a shift from outward commentary to inward exploration, as artists responded to globalisation, urbanisation, and evolving values through a personal lens.

Featuring 38 artists working across painting, photography, installation and moving image, the exhibition explores solitude, memory, anxiety and ambiguity. Rather than offering linear narratives or grand statements, many of the works channel uncertainty and introspection – privileging the sensory or psychological over the overtly political.

Following previous chapters in the Sigg Collection’s evolving display at M+, Inner Worlds turns attention to how feeling becomes form. The works gathered here propose emotional expression as a way to process and survive change – deliberate, unresolved and open-ended.
