Snow Chung’s Sand Art: Fleeting Hong Kong Connections

Why We Recommend it

Local artist Snow Chung transforms 15 Hong Kong cityscapes into illuminated sand paintings that capture fleeting human encounters and urban stillness.

Description

Snow Chung transforms 15 Hong Kong cityscapes — from Monster Building and Temple Street to Stone Slab Street (Pottinger Street) and Choi Hung Estate — into sand paintings captured in light boxes. Rather than literal depictions, her works evoke the emotional rhythms of each neighbourhood: subtle stranger interactions, quiet warmth and layered impressions between memory and reality. Fleeting moments, like balloons from Choi Hung kids or shared food in Tai Mei Tuk, anchor these scenes, inviting viewers to rediscover overlooked urban humanity.

The title Still, There Is Light plays on dual meanings — what continues to exist and to the act of stopping, even momentarily. Chung channels shifting emotional states in everyday life acknowledging that restlessness, fatigue, and uncertainty are all experiences worth recognising and recording. There is also an immersive section, Sand · Shadow · Light, which is created in collaboration with composer Yip Siu-Chung. Entering a darkened sensory space where abstract sand-and-light visuals flow slowly in sync with original music, the section invites personal, unguided observation and reflection.

Chung, president of the Hong Kong Sand Art Association and founder of Flow Sand Art Academy and Snow Sand Art Creation, blends sand, light, and narrative to explore memory, emotion, and time. She has collaborated with Dior, Sotheby’s, Ferragamo and Diptyque. Her hybrid sand practice spans performances, moving images and fixed works like the Under the Flowing Sand series.

The opening reception will be held on 25 February from 16:00 to 18:00.
