Song of Lear: A Powerful Oratorio Debuts in Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it

Reimagining Shakespeare’s King Lear, Poland’s Song of the Goat Theatre brings its award-winning oratorio Song of Lear to Hong Kong for its debut performance.

Description

After sweeping a triple award at the 2012 Edinburgh Festival Fringe and receiving acclaim on tours across Europe and Asia, the powerful oratorio Song of Lear now arrives in Hong Kong for its long-awaited debut.

Reimagining Shakespeare’s King Lear, the oratorio by Poland’s Song of the Goat Theatre unfolds as a sequence of songs shaped into a dramatic poem. Directed by the company’s co-founder Grzegorz Bral, the production features 11 performer-vocalists and includes 12 original compositions that expand upon key moments from Shakespeare’s tragedy. Each piece interweaves text fragments, vocal expression, and physical movement to reveal the emotional and spiritual core of Lear.

The performance will be narrated in English, with Chinese and English subtitles, while the songs will be performed in multiple languages. Conducted in English, post-performance meet-the-artist sessions will be held after the shows on 6 and 7 February.

Two theatre workshops, conducted in English and led by director Bral and performer Alicja Bral, will also be held on 4 and 8 February at 19:30 at the Rehearsal Hall, 7/F, Sheung Wan Civic Centre.
