Opera and Documentary: Asia Society’s Summer Screenings

Why We Recommend it

Asia Society screens a variety of quality films over the summer, including a documentary on iconic American abstract expressionist artist Philip Guston, and screenings of Metropolitan Opera’s productions.

Description

The latest additions to their ongoing programme are Philip Guston: A Life Lived (USA, 1982), a documentary that traces the life of one of America’s leading abstract expressionists, as well as afternoon screenings of three operas by New York’s Metropolitan Opera.

The featured operas are: An evocative interpretation of Vincenzo Bellini’s bel canto masterpiece Norma; Thomas Adès’ The Exterminating Angel, a surreal fantasy, inspired by the eponymous classic Luis Buñuel film, about a dinner party from which the guests can’t escape; and a unique interpretation of Mozart’s Così Fan Tutte, a comedy about the sexes, which the Metropolitan Opera set in a carnival-esque, funhouse environment inspired by 1950s Coney Island.
