Symbols of Identity: The Subtle Art of Indonesia’s Ikat

Why We Recommend it

HKU’s Symbols of Identity unveils Indonesia’s ikat masterpieces, revealing the hidden asymmetries and artistry long overlooked by scholars.

Description

The University Museum and Art Gallery (HKU)’s Symbols of Identity: IKAT Textiles from Indonesia is an insightful exhibition celebrating the artistic brilliance of Indonesian weavers. Building on the museum’s acclaimed 2017 showcase, the presentation uncovers the hidden asymmetries woven into ikat fabrics — subtle visual deceptions that challenge traditional notions of balance and design.

Through refined craftsmanship and deep cultural symbolism, master weavers cleverly embedded irregularities that remained unnoticed by scholars for over a century. Rooted in the islands’ hierarchical traditions and competitive spirit, these ingenious textiles invite visitors to discover their concealed layers of meaning. Supported by the HKU Museum Society, the exhibition honours the dyers’ virtuosity and creative flow, offering a fresh lens on Indonesia’s textile heritage.
