Better Together: Team Spirit Behind HK Cinema

Why We Recommend it

Better Together traces Hong Kong film through the ethos of “partnering up,” where teamwork shapes cinematic spectacle and cultural identity.

Description

Curated by award-winning film director Sunny Chan, Tai Kwun’s Better Together – Partnering Up for Hong Kong Movies examines the enduring Cantonese ethos of partnering together (paak3 zyu6 soeng5 拍住上) — moving forward side by side — through the lens of local cinema. From mid-century chivalry to post-millennial moral ambiguity, the exhibition threads together iconic films like Aces Go Places and Once a Thief that reflect shifting social values and evolving relationships. Action spectacle becomes a language of solidarity: car chases, wire work and improvised stunts reveal a collaborative ingenuity forged under constraint.

With support from the Federation of Hong Kong Filmmakers, the show brings together original props, reconstructed scenes, and behind-the-scenes accounts from industry veterans, foregrounding the collective labour behind the screen. What emerges is more than film history; it is a portrait of a city’s shared instincts — resilient, adaptive, and bound by an unspoken pact to face uncertainty together.
