Co-creating a Pleasant Place at Tai Kwun

Why We Recommend it

Tai Kwun presents its third edition of Open the Box, Pleasant Place with Ryan Villamael, inviting audiences to co-create a canopy of paper leaves and interconnected stories.

Description

In its third edition, Tai Kwun’s participatory programme Open the Box presents Pleasant Place with Ryan Villamael, inviting audiences of all ages to enjoy a canopy of paper leaves and celebrating interconnected stories.

The project is inspired by the Filipino artist’s ongoing Locus Amoenus series, a Latin term meaning “pleasant place” that evokes a dreamlike pastoral landscape of refuge, abundance and harmony. Known for his use of paper as a sculptural medium, the artist explores themes of history and collective memory through the series of work.

From 4 July to 2 August, the public viewing period invites visitors to wander through an immersive, forest-like environment, moving beneath and around suspended foliage. Workshops held from 4 to 26 July invite participants to create clusters of leaves, vines, or abstract terrain fragments, assembling them into small landscapes that reflect their own interpretation of a “pleasant place.”

The programme is closed on Monday and a closing ceremony will take place on 2 August at 16:00.
