Tam Kung Festival: Revering a Sea Deity

Why We Recommend it

Coinciding with the Buddha’s Birthday, the Tam Kung Festival honours the sea deity of eternal youth with lion dances and street parades at Shau Kei Wan’s historic temple.

Description

Coinciding with the Buddha’s Birthday, Hong Kong’s coastal communities transform into a sea of colour to honour Tam Kung. Unlike many deities, Tam Kung is uniquely depicted as an 80-year-old man with the youthful face of a child, symbolising the eternal youth and wisdom he reportedly attained during the Yuan dynasty (1279–1368).

Originally a child prodigy from Huizhou capable of healing the sick and forecasting the weather, he remains a vital protector for local fishermen. The heart of the festivities takes place in Shau Kei Wan, home to the city’s oldest Tam Kung Temple. Witness high-energy lion and dragon dances and a spirited street parade. It is a rare opportunity to experience a living tradition that blends maritime folklore with the enduring, youthful spirit of one of Hong Kong’s most beloved protectors.
