Why We Recommend it

Presented by HK Cine Fan, this special program will screen ten films by esteemed feminist director Jane Campion, the only female filmmaker who has ever won the prestigious Cannes Palme d’Or.

Description

Dame Elizabeth Jane Campion (b. 1954) is a New Zeeland screenwriter, producer, and director. Her films, often revolving around the themes of of gender politics, such as seduction and female sexual power, have changed the reception of female-driven narratives.

The program includes Campion’s debut feature film Sweetie (Australia, 1989), a decidedly feminine and deliberately subversive movie revolving around the contentious relationship between a twenty-something-year old, her family, and her emotionally unstable sister.

It will also show Palme d’Or-winning drama The Piano (New Zealand/Australia/France, 1993) telling the story of a mute Scotswoman, who travels to New Zealand with her daughter for an arranged marriage, her piano being her only means of expression.
