The Future of the Past: Films That Challenge History

Why We Recommend it

Co-presented by the Hong Kong International Film Festival Society and the Goethe-Institut Hong Kong, this film programme will screen seven films from Germany and across Asia that all interrogate history.

Description

Film is a powerful art form that can reflect on people’s views and sentiments toward history. It has the power to influence the way people think about the past, and remind us that history is not monolithic.

The Future of the Past: Who Makes History? will screen movies from China, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, Hong Kong and Germany that all draw on the banal lives of ordinary people through history.

The films that will be screened  are curated by film scholars. Selected films include the iconic melodrama Farewell My Concubine (Hong Kong, 1993), The Sea Knows (South Korea, 1961) and Barbara (Germany, 2012).

The film scholars Jane Yu (Taiwan), Ross Chen (HK) and Nicolas Wackerbarth (Germany) will introduce the respective films and conduct a panel discussion.
