The Impossible Trial Returns to Hong Kong

Why We Recommend it

Critically acclaimed Cantonese musical The Impossible Trial returns to Hong Kong this August for its third run, featuring the original star-studded cast along with new talent joining the lineup.

Description

Following its official premiere in Shanghai and Beijing in summer, The Impossible Trial returns to Hong Kong in August for a third run with original star-studded cast, plus additional cast featuring new stars.

The musical blends the modern Western theatrical genre with a story set in the Qing Dynasty (1644–1911). It follows Fong Tong-geng, a corrupt barrister in Guangdong, who suddenly loses all his reputation and wealth. Haunted by a resentful ghost, Fong sets out to right his wrongs and redeem himself as a champion of the common man.

Since its Hong Kong premiere in 2022, The Impossible Trial has swept over 20 critics’ awards in the city and mainland China. Commissioned by WestK and co-produced and co-presented with HKRep, the musical features a top-notch creative team, including composer and musical director Leon Ko, lyricist Chris Shum, playwright Cheung Fei-fan, director Fong Chun-kit, and main cast members Lau Shau-ching, Jordan Cheng and Tunes Ting.

The show runs from 14 August to 10 September at the Xiqu Centre. It will be performed in Cantonese with Chinese and English subtitles.
