Touch Gallery Explores Realism in an AI Age

Why We Recommend it

As AI gets better at replicating the reality of our physical world, five artists from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong try to answer the question of why artists would still approach realism.

Description

“Why do we still try to approach realism in the age of AI?”

“What is the use of realistic art when AI can capture and replicate reality just as well, if not better?”

These are the questions the five artists behind Touch Gallery’s These Are Paintings are attempting to answer with their own realistic art pieces, each beautifully depicted with their unique art style. They believe that the answer lies in the liminal space between precision and imperfection, objective and subjective and our world and the artist’s vision – none of which can be replicated by artificial intelligence.

These five artists come from Japan, Taiwan and Hong Kong. Okumura Akifumi’s works uses traditional Japanese painting techniques capture the relationship between animals, humans and nature. Lin Haobai depicts architecture and still life with urban light and shadow in his works. Meanwhile, Wang Haozhun’s paintings of Hong Kong dollars critique the culture and relationship we have with money. Steven Tang pushes the limits of coloured pencils in his depiction of humble street food. Capturing objects with precision, Grace Mak blurs reality and fiction with her works.
